Tips for Finding Affordable Classic Cars

Written by

The very idea of finding an affordable classic car and owning it may seem like nothing but a pipe dream to the average car owner. Especially as some of the really expensive models are worth several million.

When you look beyond the high profile auctions and high profile sites, however, you will find that it is still possible to find classic cars for sale for reasonable prices. Although not all classic cars within your budget will be what you really want or need, you will still be able to find something worth investing in if you know what you are doing.

Below, we have put together a list of some helpful tips so that your search for a classic car for sale that you can afford is a success.

Do Proper Research

One of the first things you need to do if you are interested in buying a classic car is to do thorough research. You need to consider the price, yes, but more importantly, you need to find a car you actually like. Think about the different manufacturers, models and designs and have an idea in mind of the type of car you want both inside and out. Then you can start thinking about the price.

Know Where to Look

If you are new to the classic car market, it may all feel a little overwhelming. However, don’t worry as everyone was a beginner at some point. The best way to conduct your search is to look where classic cars are normally found. Classic car dealers like The Old School Garage, Classic Car Shop, classic car clubs. Clubs are great because it allows you to network with other classic car aficionados and find out trends and the different cars that are currently available. Most members of these clubs are very hospitable and willing to help where possible.

Examples of Classic Cars You Could Afford

When people hear the term classic car, they often think of the really expensive, one in a production line of 100, super rare models. However, there are actually a wide range of classic cars that are very affordable, like

  • VW Golf GTI Mark 1 – The Golf GT is widely regarded as the first ‘hot hatch’ and despite its prominence, you will only need to pay approximately £20,000 max for the Mark 1 model.
  • Ford Capri – This was initially released as Ford’s alternative to the incredibly popular Mustang, for the European market. It became a huge success in the UK for Ford and several models were produced. Today, these can fetch for anything from £5,000 to £20,000, so very affordable.
  • Mini – One of the most culturally influential car models of all time, is actually very affordable. These can sell for between £3,000 and £20,000. As they are increasing in worth, though, it’s better to get one now rather than later.

Don’t Forget Insurance

It doesn’t matter whether this is the first of many, a one-off investment, or a car you actually intend on driving, you need to think about car insurance when buying classic cars for sale. As with anything, do not just accept the first offer you come across – get a few quotes from different insurers and make sure you get the package and all the extras you need too.
